The gaming industry has seen exponential growth, but many games still lack the inclusivity necessary to accommodate all players. “Designing Accessible Gaming Experiences” is an interactive workshop aimed at game developers, designers, and accessibility advocates. This session will explore the principles and practices behind creating games accessible to players with diverse abilities. Participants will gain insights into the challenges faced by gamers with disabilities and learn practical strategies to make games more inclusive. They will also design a game considering a specific disability, encouraging them to engage with accessibility firsthand.

Topics to be covered (subject to session length and format):

  • Introduction to Game Accessibility
  • The importance of inclusive design in the gaming industry
  • Accessibility Features and Technologies: Visual, auditory, and motor accessibility options
  • Case Studies: Examples of successful accessible games and lessons from the Audio Game Hub and other projects
  • Practical Design Techniques: Creating effective audio cues, haptic feedback, and applying Universal Design principles
  • Balancing accessibility with gameplay and challenge
  • Future of Accessible Gaming: Emerging technologies and trends in accessible game design
  • Designing a game with a specific disability in mind

The workshop is tailored to foster a dynamic learning environment where participants can learn from each other’s experiences and insights.
